Default Fan Speed Question

I have a 1998 LS400 and a 2005 LS430. One thing I have noticed between the 2 cars is how the fan blows in the same setting on both cars. For example, one bar on the 1998 gives a good breeze out the center vent. One bar on the 2005 can barely be felt.

No matter how hot it gets (90 degrees) the 1998 will cool just fine in the Auto mode at a setting of 72 degrees. In the 2005 at 90 degrees I can't leave the setting in "Auto" as it won't cool the car adequately. It's like the fan is barely putting out and air. I get it up to 2 bars in the 2005 and it's still not as much air coming out as 1 bar in the 1998. The air is cold in both cars but I haven't measured the exact temp. I'm more concerned about the fan speed difference and it is very noticeably weaker in the 2005. Any ideas?

Do you keep the rear AC vents closed when no one is in the back? This helps. I do not remember much difference between my 99 and my 04 but it may be that the fan is just a different model that spins at a different rpm. I only use low in the summer when the temperatue drops and I start to get cold. I also don't use the auto fan personally. I never liked the car adjusting fan speed for me. I only use auto recirculate switching with carbon monoxide detection. This feature I have always loved.

Have you checked you air filters on the LS430? Might be clogged, thus not giving out the right amount of air.

My 04 LS430's center vent fan is also weaker than my 07 LS460 at settings 1 and 2. I think it's just the calibration of the settings. Setting 2 on the 430 is about as strong as setting 1 on the 460. The side vents are more powerful than the center vents.

Not a big deal, I just turn the setting higher.

+ 1 on replacing the cabin air filter. It will restrict air flow when dirty - located just above the fan. Given the relatively small size (surface area) of the cabin filter, mine tends to get dirty sooner than the larger size engine air filter.

Also, though obvious, are the center vent controls (thumb wheels) fully "open"?

thanks for your responses. I have a new AC filter in place only 500 miles (1 month old). I did pull it out to recheck it and it looks clean as a whistle. I guess I have just gotten used to my '00 GS300 and my '98 LS400 which both really blow some air at one bar. The '05 LS430 seems pitifully weak. I guess I can't use the "AUTO" setting at least in the hot summer.....

Any other ideas if the filter is good?

I only use the auto feature all year long. Perfect under all conditions. Lowering the speed to maintain the selected temperature allows the car to be quieter. If you don't feel like it's enough cold air, then lower the temperatue setting. 110F in Phoenix now and no problem in keepig the car cool when set at 76F.
