The owners manual is in liters if I'm not mistaken. I do 5.5 quarts with filter change when using the motorcraft fl400s which is slightly oversized over the oem toyota filter.

Why should this be so confusing. It's just a matter of mathematics. I drained all my oil and removed my oil filter. I replace my oil filter and added 5 qts of Mobile 1 synthetic. I'm slightly overfilled. Why? Wasn't all the oil drained properly? The new oil is crystal clear. I have no clues, but if .2 of a quart is overfilled.... I should rest comfortably tonight unless I'm an OCD Nut.

My 2005 owners manual is in L (qt., Imp.qt.)
with filter 4.5 (4.8 , 4.0)
without filter 4.2 (4.4 , 3.7)

But it takes about 6 qts to get it about .25 inches above the full dot. Go figure

It's not so much confusing as it is interesting that some use 4.8 qts, some use 5 qts, some use 5.5 qts and some use 6 qts to get their LS430's to the full mark on the dipstick. Then again, some manuals for the same model seem to have different oil capacities than others. Doesn't seem right but it is what it is....

Size / type of the oil filter and the amount of time you let old oil drain will affect the measurement. I always add my 5 qt and just use the dip stick to top it off to the correct level. At least in my experience, after adding the 5 qt jug it is about 1/2 - 1/3 of a qt low.

Thumbs up Is it the oil pans?

This is kind of interesting.

Do different years use different oil pans? Are the part numbers different?

If not, then it is the dip stick. The other thing I remember is that oil is retained in the valleys and crevices of the cylinder heads and does not easily return to the pan. That is why I think that a dry fill may be as much as seven quarts.

I know that these motors use an oil pan baffle or splash guard to keep the oil in the pan from getting whipped up by the crank shaft. That is good and means that over filling the pan a quart doesn't hurt anything. As long as the oil level is below the baffle, all is good.

My guess is that any amount of fresh oil between 4.5 to 5.5 quarts is fine.

By the way I switched over to the Ford FL400 filter. easy to come by and works great. Holds more oil to.

It's been awhile. I see that you have a "31" now.

it would seem there is some variance in manuals for some reason, and the manual actually may not match what the vehicle actually uses. On top of that, seems for the same model year, there is even variance so can't say that for this year it's this, for that year it's that.
I know for me, when I change with filter change, I add a 5 quart mobil 1 jug from Walmart and it brings right up to the middle of the hashes. Then when I add another .5 qts, it's up to the top mark. I usually go with adding the .5 quarts, as my RX will use that other .5. As my LS is not leaking or losing oil between changes (5000 miles), I would not worry that it's at the 1/2 way mark actually.

I am the original poster for this thread. After noticing being slightly overfilled after using the 5 qt Mobile 1 container, I took my car back to the local station and by removing the oil filter, draining it and reinstalling it, I would say I am just about right on the line for max. All is well now. End of story.

Changed my oil today thinking the LS430 took 4.8 qts as stated in the manual with filter change. After pouring the 5 quart jug of Mobile 1 HM in it turns out it's .5 of a quart short. Live and learn after all these years of ownership.
