Hey guys, new to the forum. I recently picked up a 2004 LS430. Best choice I've made so far. 94k, so it's due for some maintenance. I've been reading around and getting mixed comments on what do to. Below is what I am planning to do. Anything I am leaving out?

2004 LS430
94k Miles

Timing Belt
Water Pump
Thermostat with Gasket
Spark Plugs
Transmission Flush
Rear Diff Flush
Coolant Flush

I'd also check the brakes for wear... and along with timing belt, replace belts, and cam seals in the front.
Throttle body service/cleaning, for sure... that's usually neglected.
And it's not time yet, but since they are taking things part I'd swap out the plugs also.

Thanks! Brakes are good. Just changed them. But will do throttle body service and plugs.

I would also stay away from flushing the transmission. Most dealers don't flush and the 04+ LS430 has a more complicated service procedure the transmission. Drain and refill is the best way to service the transmission.

I've been reading, and a lot of members on the forums are saying that flushing is the way to go. They say that its because it will suck out all the old fluid and fill it with new fluid that was sucked out. Verses the drain and fill, which only drains 2-3 quarts out of 10 quarts, and fills back only 2-3 quarts. Correct me if I am wrong . Thanks.

I have not read many members saying to do a flush... Drain and fill is the way to go. Just do 2-3 drain and fills over a year or so and you are all set.

Unfortunately, terminology gets in the way of communication. There are three types if "refreshing" the ATF:
1. Drain & refill = drain fluid and replace with the same amount. This will refresh the fluid if repeated a few times.
2. Fluid exchange = uses a machine to suck out and simultaneously replace ALL the ATF. I believe that it uses the transmission cooler lines, but an not certain of that. Downside is that it costs maybe $200.
3. Power flush = just as it says. This is the NOT RECOMMENDED procedure.


But why don't you guys recommend fluid exchange if it drains everything out and gives you new fluid? I've talked to my buddies that actually done with fluid exchange as well, and never had a problem, says it feels smoother too.

Alright here is the update,

I called a few dealership, and I guess the do recommend the drain and refill. They say to do it every oil change until it is good enough. Thanks for the help guys.

Every oil change is bit excessive. I would do it once and again in about 15k and maybe one more time in another 15k. I have had mine done twice and the tech said the fluid looked in really good shape (118k on my 04). The whole idea of doing it slowly is to not shock the system with totally new fluid and potentially dislodge something if there is any buildup.

I would add to the list:

- Clean MAF
- De-carb throttle body
- Take a look at all your bushings including the 3 motor mounts. The rear motor mount is very easy to do. The main two are a bit harder.
