Synthetic Oil Change Intervals.
Just changed her just at 8000 miles. I was thinking about taking a sample but I did not have my kit with me. Obviously, color is not the correct way to determine the viscosity and metal content but it is interesting to see how it changes and how well the oil filter is doing. Anyway, the color was a dark brown but not black or really bad looking.
Mobile 1 5w30 and a Bosch extended life filter is what I had in it. I did switch to a new oil and filter after research and reviews. Looking at Bobs the oil guy. Pennzoil Platinum synthetic, which seems to have better ratings then Mobile 1, and the raved about Motocraft FL400s oil filter, which is an larger filter then stock and has a special silicon anti drain-back valve. Both have really good reviews.
At what interval are you changing your synthetic oil? Any opinions or reviews on the oil and filter you use?

My local dealer says 10K on their synthetic service but that is a little too much for me. From what I have read 7500 - 8k is right when synthetic starts to break down to the point that it is good to change it. If anything, kind of cheap stock filter is part of the issue. The old one was great. Toyota (NipponDenso) --- 90915-20004 (made in Japan)

Mileage is a factor but it's dependent on driving style, weather conditions, and commute. So whatever data you collect here will not apply universally. I personally change it every 6 months regardless of mileage, some people on BITOG will tell you a year is fine too but all depends on how the car is driven.

I run 5k intervals which for me is about 9 months. I have been using mix of Penzoil Platinum, Ultra, or Mobil 1, MB1 EP - depending on what is on sale. filters have been a mix of OEM Toyota, Napa Platinum, and WIX gold filters, again depending on what is on sale. I think as long as you use brand name full syn and a good filter you could easily go 7500. I don't because mostly because I spent most of my life doing 3k oil changes until recently so 5k feels like pushing it, also I diy so its pretty cheap, oil changes really not a good place to scrimp on a few bucks in my opinion. Just diy, wait for a good sale/rebate on oil or filters and stock up. Some of the Penziol 5 quart jugs I got had serious rebates on them, paid very little for 5 quart jugs at the time with rebate.

I've run Pennzoil Ultra (old verison) 5W-30 and am now running Mobil 1 0W-40. I've used the Toyota OEM filter and Fram Ultra Filters. I have some Motorcraft Fl-400S filters also.
From BITOG, the only Mobil 1 that stands out is the 0W-40, otherwise most others use Pennzoil Platinum if they're going to use 5W-30 etc.
I change my oil every 3000 to 3750 miles. I also installed a Fumoto drain which makes changing the oil even simpler and cleaner. When I drained my Pennzoil Ultra it was super clean. I've never seen oil that "clean" after 3k miles. Perhaps it was the Fram Ultra synthetic filter in conjunction with the reliable easy on the oil V8 engine.
I have noticed that the car runs a little bit quieter on the 40 vs 30. There's been no discernible gas mileage difference between the 2 oil weights.
From BITOG, the only Mobil 1 that stands out is the 0W-40, otherwise most others use Pennzoil Platinum if they're going to use 5W-30 etc.

the Fram XG3600 is one of my 3 favorite LS oil filers at the moment, quite impressive when you crack it open and see how much they put into this one!
the other two are:
Motorcraft FL-400S - a favorite I am currently running, well built and best anti-drainback valve of any LS compatible filter, and that is probably the most important feature of an oil filter, as it ensures fast oil to critical areas on startup, which is great on wear
Toyota 90915-20004 - made in Japan by Denso and super free flowing + oversize, though not as large as these other two....getting harder to find and pricey, great filter though! (it's the filter that got all these LS cars to 400K miles that you hear about)

The engine is expected to be quieter with a thicker oil. In SoCal, it averages mid to high 90s in the summer and add on some commuter traffic from Los Angeles and I wanted a slightly thicker weight. Mobil 1 0W-40 is noted to be a thinner 40 weight oil already. More protection vs shearing and it'll likely shear to a 30 weight in my driving environment.
40 & 50 weight oils in the LS is used in other parts of the globe with more mild temperatures per international owner's manuals.
Oil consumption or leakage was not an issue with the 30 and definitely not with the 40.
The additive pack in the Mobil 1 0W-40 is unmatched in any other mobil 1 oil and since Pennzoil Ultra (old version) is gone, I decided to try a readily accessible 5.1 qt bottle for 25 from my local Wal-Mart.
Per BITOG, if running oil for longer intervals, Mobil 1 0W-40 is among the best for retaining the TBN for extended drain intervals. I personally just prefer changing oil a bit more often.

I personally wanted to try out a great 40W oil in my LS430. I didn't do it because I was having problems with the 30W oils.
30W oil is perfectly fine, OEM recommended, etc. 40W is a little bit heavier and under higher temperatures or mountain driving or similar conditions a 40W never hurts to be in the engine. I'm sure a 30W would be alright too.

How does the 20 weight oil work in your LS 430? How long have you used a 20 weight oil? Any differences in MPG and engine sound/smoothness? Just curious because I do not think Toyota/Lexus has approved a 20 weight oil for our engines. Even though, I think a 20 weight oil would work well in our cars but what do I know. LOL... Thanks.
