Default telescoping wheel question.

Need some opinions on this. My tilt steering like many others has finally stopped working and decided to freeze up in the lowest position. I have ordered a new tilt motor from sewell and read the how tos for the fix and looks fairly straight forward.

My question involves the telescoping wheel. The wheel retracts automatically when car is turned off and I can adjust it via the switch with no problems. It does not automatically come out when I start the car or adjust on the memory settings. What would cause this?

Would the dead tilt motor cause the auto telescope feature to act like this? I'd buy a new motor for the telescope but don't think that's the issue since it works manually and when I turn the car off.

I had the steering wheel thing (same symptoms as you - retracts when shut off; had to manually adjust after starting). Had it happen for a few days. Then could not start car. AAA responded and checked battery cells, finding a bad cell. I told him of my problem w/steering wheel each day. He said that is a typical symptom of a failing cell. I remember accepting his statement, but doubting any connection between the two.

He replaced the battery (This was in 2010) and I haven't had a problem with the steering wheel since. Go figure.

My battery is a few years old and I've had to jump it a few times from leaving lights on etc so you might be onto something. I'll replace it since its due anyway and see what happens.
