Default Bouncy fuel and tach gauges

I was wondering if any of you guys have any problems with the tach and fuel gauges kind of bouncing around. The fuel gauge only bounces when you turn the key from off to on but settles to it's proper level quickly. The tach needle bounces somewhat when making a shift under hard acceleration. This happens on my LS430 and others that I have test drove as well. Any fixes? Thanks all!

My 01 does the same thing. It really doesn't bother me that much since the fuel gauge only bounces on start up and I don't really look at the tach while I am flooring it. But it would be interesting to hear what others have to say

Must be a 01-03 thing. Doesn't happen with the 04-06 clusters.

Haven't seen this on my 2005 or any of the 04+ I test drove.

I wish it was an 01 - 03 thing. My '04 UL has a bouncy fuel gauge on start up. I had the fuel pump replaced when it failed a few months ago. Didn't change the gauge behavior unfortunately. The tach and other gauges are normal and never bounce.
I have a worry that it's the cluster. Anyone solved this?

Never seen anything like that in my 04 UL.

It seems like you answered your own question.

Under HARD acceleration, my 01 has a slight "bounce" on the tach, but im assuming its from gunning it. As I slow down, the tach "bounces" a bit as well when it shifts to the higher gears to cruise. My gas bounces only at startup.

Mine is an 04 and does this as well. Only at startup.

I think it's the fuel tank sending unit, Denso Part # 9550104:

Toyota dealer quoted me 1 hour of labor to replace. Just not 100% sure if this is actually the problem.

My 2002 430 (119k mi) fuel needle also has a slight "bounce" at start-up. All other gauges look ok.

My 06 gas needle "bounces" at start up only. Everything else looks normal. Good to know that others are having the same thing

I'm going to go ahead and get the fuel tank sending unit replaced. My dealer is 100% sure that is the issue as he tested the cluster and everything is normal. I'll keep everyone posted.

You might be close in your diagnosis. I did read the link about the fuel gauge modules being the culprit, however my Service Manager had a different read on the issue. I too have the bouncy fuel gauge which I asked him about 4 years ago when I purchased my car. He mentioned it as being an electrical component of the cluster (forgot the exact part name) and I was told it can continue that way for the life of the car or go tomorrow. He added that a sign of failure would be the instrument cluster intermittently or completely going dark. Regardless, the fix (cost wise) did not make sense, so until it becomes an issue, I will be living with it.

PS. The link that mentioned the fuel gauge modules as the problem was dated 2004 while I received my info in the year 2010. Possibly the service manager had a number of complaints over the additional 6 years of the LS430 being in service to come to his conclusion. Personally, I can not confirm a definitive fix.

Well turns out the fuel tank sending unit didn't fix it, and the dealer is blaming the cluster now.

If anyone can confirm a fix, that would be great. As others mentioned ,my fuel gauge works fine, but the bounce is annoying

You need to send the cluster in so we can test it and repair.
