Default Check engine light (P0455) AFTER timing belt job....fishy? Help please.

Had the whole timing belt service done, and a few days later the CEL comes on. Reset it and 3 days later it came back on.

Called the dealer and they said they'd read the code for free (Monday), but I went to Autozone and pulled it anyway because I'm so impatient. The code was P0455, which is a major leak in the evap system. Gas cap appears NOT to be the issue, tight seal it seems. Could be wrong though.

Now, I honestly think that the tech missed something or forgot to reconnect something (evap hose?) when he did the TB job...it's just too big a coincidence that I've had absolutely NO issues whatsoever and then after they basically tear down the engine and put it back together I'm throwing a code.

Does anyone have any input? I'm no mechanic but I honestly think it's something that was a result of the service, something they left out. Sorta disappointed because I took it to dealer, but as long as they'll stand behind their work it's fine. That's exactly why I have all services done there.

The Autozone guy said maybe they forgot to reattach the evap hose (or didn't tighten enough).

What do you guys think? I need some help here, as on Wednesdsay I'm taking the car on a 2,000 mile road trip.

THANK GOD it's not the cats, I was scared half to death for a minute.

Likely something left disconnected or loose.

If you remove the engine cover (4 ) 10mm bolts and look to the right of the intake you will see the purge valve. typically it can come loose during the repair.
it looks like this and could be your issue.

I think Kaplan has it!

Turned out to be some sort of disconnected egr valve; lol I got no receipt bc I don't think they wanted it on the record that I was back because they screwed up. But all is well, my guy took care of me like he always does. That's why I pay extra for dealer work, bc they stand behind it. Lol I jokingly was like "I knew I was crazy to think something was actually wrong with this car!!" Haha.

Glad you got it fixed. By the way, if your cats do fail don't be too scared. You don't have to go OEM on that part. OEM are insanely expensive. You can get aftermarket cats for 1/3 the cost of OEM. Magnaflow for example.

aftermarket cats are junk compared to your original cats - I would hang on to my original factory cats for dear life!

besides, LS400 and 430 factory cats almost never go bad, so if you think that is your issue, it's very likely something else. Always do a back pressure test at the O2 sensor before even considering the replacement of what is perhaps the world's best catalytic converters!

Mine went bad. On my LS400. I went through an ordeal getting it all done checking for leaks and replacing both post cat 02 sensors. Anyway, getting the Magnaflow cats rated for the LS400 or 430 at 1/3rd the cost was defiantly worth it. $450 installed vs 3 grand at a dealer. You can keep you OEM cats...

Besides a malfunctioning motor, using 87 octane and bad gas contributed to their premature failure.

For me, I'll keep the OEM cats. I have a 92 SC400, original owner since new in 1991, that has never failed the ridiculous Arizona emission tests. Never replaced the mufflers or cats and the emission results are only 1/4 the state requirement. I think that speaks for itself.

I bet your ECU caps are not original - that is the year and model I see go bad more than any other!

I'll take that bet. I've owned the car since new in 1991 and I can assure that that the caps have not been replaced!

hmmm, I wonder if the crazy-low Arizona humidity is somehow helping these caps last longer, I have lost count at the number of south Florida SC400's I have seen with bad caps, for example!

Haha I had no reason to think it actually was my cats, I was just paranoid that the issue that threw the code was the worst case scenario lol.

It would be my luck to drop a grand in preventative maintenance and then a week later have to spend another $3000 from something actually fu*king up. Lol. The car has not had one single issue, EVER.

When I had my TB changed on my '01 LS 430 at an independent shop the same thing happened. The "check engine" light came on the next day. I took it back and when they check the said that the belt was "one notch off". They fixed it and no more problem. Hope this helps.
