take the assembly out of the dash and inspect it. Its all simple mechanicals and you'll be able to find why its binding. Just a couple screws securing it then pull the entire panel out (everything under the radio).

This brings back up the age old question: Where did they expect us to put our cell phones.
Ive seen the ash tray conversion but its like $200+ Personally I stick with the Pass. Seat or on my lap....

It really does baffle me the lack of storage space for accessable items like phones and wallets... there really is not place to hold things that is easily accessable... I love the top tray in the center console, but even that can be a pain to open and reach.

There are lots of nice aftermarket phone holders and charging cradle solutions depending on what phone you have. I particularly like the iOttie Easy Flex 2 phone holder I installed in my wife's Prius wagon to hold her iPhone and I love the Samsung charging cradle I mounted on a leather Kuda console in my 00 LS400 I use with my Galaxy S3. Kuda has a leather phone console for the LS430.

I've had it jam a few times due to having thick cables run through the back of it, but it was easy to fix.
Take the whole thing apart and flick the little tab over to the right way and making sure the spring thing is flexed the right way. It's hard to explain over text, you really have to see how it works. If you've forced the tray open or closed, it may be irrepairable.
From the diagram at http://lexus.sewellparts.com/images/...000/581843.jpg, it looks like 58880B - part # 58880-50010

How about carrying it in your pocket as you normally do and using the inbuilt wireless blue tooth? Even better, is take the "no texting while driving" pledge while minimizing phone calls while driving.
