Default New to Lexus and 2001-2003 vs 2004 questions

Hello all!

I am strongly considering a Lexus LS 430. I have test driven an '04 and really enjoyed the ride. However, this will be my first luxury car (had a late 90's Camry first, then a 1997 Ford Ranger, then a 2004 Honda Civic) so while I know that Lexus, and the LS in particular, is extremely reliable I am a little nervous. Do I have any reason to be so?

Also, I was looking at the LS and these forums seems to suggest the 2004 for the model revisions. I was looking around on the forums, and elsewhere, and it seems like the lights got revamped and a new gear added. Also a some new options for equipment and new standard equipment. Would I be missing out on anything major if I just stuck between 2001-2002? I can get a really good deal.

Thanks all for your help.

I have a base 2001 and I love it, my next one will be a 04 most likely, I was nervous when I bought mine, you won't be disappointed, all depends on what options you want on it, good luck

Can I ask why you want to get the 04 next?

I personally went with the 04 because the taillights look better, the front bumper looked way better, and it has a 6-speed transmission versus the 01's 5-speed.

The 04+'s have bluetooth, different bumpers, and better factory wheels. There are other little things too. I personally found the 01's to be ugly because of the bumpers and taillights.

These cars are pretty reliable so you shouldn't have anything to worry about. The most common issues I see are exhaust leaks, issues with the factory amplifiers/subwoofer, and the steering wheel tilt motor dying

Both cars will ride and handle identically. The 04 has the refresh on the headlights, front grill, rear tailights and exhaust extensions. There is a 6 speed transmission and rear backup camera as well as bluetooth. If money is a factor, you may be able to get an early series and save thousands. If the upgrades are important, go for it. Either way they are great cars all around. Only the early 04s had some transmission issues, so check that aspect of your purchase out if you go that route. Good luck....Either way you will not be disappointed.

Thanks all! Sounds like it's not worth it to me to spend the extra couple thousand and get the 04. I plan on putting in my own custom headlights eventually anyways. Thanks for the great advice!

Has anyone had any major issues with their LS, repair cost wise?

The biggest expense I have to date after 3 years of ownership with my 01 LS430 with 110,000 miles has been an oxygen sensor ($336) and rear subwoofer (Refoamed for $150). These cars are relatively bulletproof if well maintained and not the UL model. Good luck.

The most expensive repair I've seen is the air suspension going out. It's only an issue with the Ultra Luxury package cars.
