4.8 U.S. quarts works for my 2002 LS430, just like the owner's manual says. If that were not correct, Toyota would have said so.

My 2005 LS used like 5.5 quarts when my friend did an oil change. It's about the same as my 1993 SC300 as well.

Lexus cautions about overfilling and says that it can cause engine damage. Five quarts brings the oil on my 2002 LS430's dipstick about 1/2 inch above the full dot. Maybe the oil capacity was raised for later models, I'm not sure. Comparing the LS oil capacity with another vehicle is meaningless.
My 3.4 Toyota V6 takes 6 quarts. So what?

I have an '04 not an '02, but typically .2 quarts is not going to be that much on the stick as the marks are usually a 1 qt mark difference. The '04-'06 is 5.5 qts with filter change. I just put in 5 qts at change (one jug of synthetic) and it's right in the middle of the hash marks.

One would need to add about 7 to 8 qts for the crankshaft to even start hitting the oil. Once this happens it can start to foam, causing cavitation. You could put 6 qts in and not damage a flipping thing.

I agree with Post 2. My 04 manual also specs an oil change with filter as 4.5L (4.8 Qt), not 5.5.

I use OEM filter (well made) and let it drain for a long time while I do other maintenance... always takes 5 quarts exactly to the top dot... so 4.8 with filter change is accurate per the manual.

Some idiot who owned the car before me wrote 5.5 QT on the engine cover by the filler cap in permanent marker... inaccurate graffiti... the worst kind!

I got my manual all ready to scan and send...WOW. Learn something new every day. I now have no idea where I got 5.5 qts but the manual does say 4.8 qts. So, either my dip stick is not the right stick or a 30 min drain is too much and I drain it dry, but when I put in a 5 qts jug, it goes right between the hashes.
Now I have to find out how I got 5.5 in my brain.

Probably got it from the same guy who wrote it on my engine cover in permanent marker!

Sometimes those jugs are under or overfilled... check when you use one again and make sure that is not driving a difference.

Also, this is the measure with the OEM filter... using another filter could also alter the capacity.

I think the 5.5 that I have in my mind is from a previous thread a few years back where there were some doubts from members on the manual being valid because of exactly the point I have with my dipstick. I put in 5 quarts, but it only fills to midway hash marks, so that's telling me i probably have about .5 quarts left to go. In the manual it actually states that the difference between low and high is 1.5 quarts.

I'm thinking the true volume might be somewhere between 4.8-5.5 quarts. Anyway, if you fill 5 quarts, you're not overflowing to point where engine will foam, and you won't be low to point where it's bad either if capacity happens to be bigger.

The lexus dealer in my area also confirms the 4.8 qts on an 05 LS. I had my mechanic do the oil change but forgot to tell him so he poured the entire 5 qts with oem filter and my dipstick show the level at just above the max.

Dealers drain and close up once it starts to trickle. If you let it drain until "dry" it wont be at full line wih 5 qts.

With my 02 UL, I let the oil drain for a few minutes after removing the plug and filter. I empty a 5 quart container and the dipstick shows the oil is about 1/3 below the top dot. As the manual says, the distance between the dots is about 1.5 quarts. So I put in 1/2 a quart and it is right up to the dot. So 5.5 quarts works for me, it is interesting that 18 months after starting this post their is no clear right answer.

I love my LS430 but miss the "cross-hatched" flat dipstick of my '97 LS400.
