Storage box for ash tray retrofit
Like a number of people on the forum I have been coveting the thought of replacing my front console ash tray with one of the storage boxes from Sewell Lexus. I was thinking about this today and started to research whether any of the Toyota models such as Camry or Avalon may have had the same part but at a much cheaper price. I have read on the forum that the wood veneer lid can be swapped over from an ashtray to a console box in case a color match is a problem and so if the basic box was the same from a lower priced Toyota model then it would be a great option.
I have been looking at photographs on Ebay and at parts lists on line but it is not possible to tell. Does anyone have a Camry or Avalon in the family to check this possibility out?

Good idea and certainly worth checking out. My guess is that you won't find a match in a non Lexus part because the lids and various cubicle doors in the Lexus are specially designed to have a high quality tactile feel and to work extra smooth in opening and closing. While its also at least very good quality stuff, the Toyota doors/lids on compartments and cubicles are not designed to that standard.

that is an interesting thought... but my reasons for it not being too likely is that the tray has a felt lining inside. If there were an equivalent for Avalon, it would have probably just been a single plastic with no felt. Toyota would not be go generous to provide nice material for their Toyota's.

My in-laws have an 04 Avalon, I'll take a look next time I see them and see if this is a viable option. I agree with Jabberwock that the hinge and closure mechanisms are certinaly a different quality and feel when in use.
