Default ML, rear speakers

are there supposed to be 2 speakers going on either side of the subwoofer? i put the fader on rear only because it sounded front heavy when I sat back there, and I only had the rear door speakers and the subwoofer going.

Those are just air vents for the subwoofer.

Ya i thought if it wasnt speakers it went to something air related like the cooled seats or the air purifier. I also noticed there's a solar sensor that will activate/deactivate the rear A/C based on how hot it is!! I thought it was weird when it would just go off by itself, but it made sense.

So i took it in to Lexus and they ended up replacing my sub!! Love my service rep

Hmmmm, if it's only the sub that sits in the back dash, I wonder where the other speakers are? The ML system is supposed to have 11 speakers, but I can only account for 9 on my car:

1 & 2: tweeters on front dash
3 & 4: primary drivers on front doors
5 & 6: tweeters on rear doors
7 & 8: primary drivers on rear doors
9: sub-woofer on back dash.
10 & 11: ?? where are these located ??

I've not given much thought to this in the past, but aypues' post has made me curious...

Default # of speakers?

nkoppy is right. I only counted 9 speakers and it's listed as having 11. Unless the two lower front speakers are like a mid and a low range.

Yes, they do go to the rear purifier too. The Mark Levinson subwoofer design moves air through these 2 side vents - remove the rear tray and turn up the bass, you'll feel air move in and out. If you do take out your rear tray, be careful not to rip out the solar sensor on the driver side vent.

I thought it was an intentional design in order to enhance the subwoofer response, but if the non-UL ML systems do not have these side vents, then I would agree the vents are solely for the rear air purifier.

I read somewhere that out of the 11 speakers they consider the dash speakers as 2 each because they are coaxial. I can't really see very well into mine, but they look like a ~2-3" speaker to me. Maybe there is a separate tweeter in there as well.

I just purchased one from partsdotcom for 281 plus shipping.

I replaced four door speakers and the sub on a 2001 ls430 UL.

Shipping for all was $95.

I've not given much thought to this in the past, but aypues' post has made me curious...

Now I'm really confused.. on my 02 UL I count only 7 speakers. Two on front dash, two in front doors, two in back doors and sub. I thought with the ML system I should have had two tweeters in the rear doors but they are not present. What feature code puts them there?
