Default Driving my LS in manual mode....

I have tinkered with the manual shift in some cars in the past but was never really impressed. After owning my beloved LS for about six months I decided to give it a whirl. All I can say is WOW! Is it me or does the LS get torquey when you keep use the manual shift? Yet another reason to fall in love all over again!

that can't be good for your transmission if you're shifting gears when driving.

Not sure what you mean by that.... the transmission has a manual mode presumably so you can shift gears yourself...

LOL... ya can't be good.... I mean....you shift gears while you are driving?

I thought the transmission only had three gears... Park, Reverse and Drive.

With 6 forward gears and plenty of V8 torque, I find the LS430 shiftronic transmission to be merely a boy-racer novelty. However, in my H4 Subaru with a whopping 169 lb. ft. of torque and only 4 forward speeds, the shiftronic transmission is quite handy at keeping the engine spinning in the torque band.

At first I thought he meant shifting the original standard gear shifter... and that's probably not a bad thing, but I don't see why anyone would need to use it, other than engine braking.

The wouldn't mind the shiftronic in my LS to be honest.

I have used it and I was surprised that it would let the engine redline. In my mercedes the transmission will shift to the next gear rather then reach redline. This works like a true manual. You have to shift. Impressive power in manual mode.

Sorry to disappoint you Caddy... Although I usually drive like I am 65 I still like to get on her occasionally and the shifttonic makes it a bit more fun.

My Acura CL was tiptronic too, but it would automatically downshift and wouldn't allow you to upshift unless you were going faster than a certain speed at your current gear.

That's why I like the LS430 implementation - it actually does act like a true manual transmission and allows you to up/down shift as you'd like (RPM range permitting). It's certainly nice to know that I can shift down to 1st gear whenever I want, because the car can surprisingly pull off the line.

For me, the computer, when in power mode, usually selects a better gear/is smarter than me. I barely use it.

use mine for those downhills when it does not shift to a lower gear automatically,, occasionally use it for stop lights to assist slowing down,, have never used it for taking off and reaching those higher RPMs,, for those I just floor it and let the auto work on its own,,

New Lexus owner here. I was driving my 04 LS430. Stayed in 1st too long(tiptronic) and passed the redline into 7000 rpms before shifting into 2nd. Slight burning smell coming from the engine when I parked. Just paranoid because I love this car so much? Or could this cause some damage. 128k
