I don't want to be a negative nancy, but the dealer was saying that the XM/sat connection was also at fault...they removed it completely...and then I still had the same problem a few days later.

I do hope you found your problem, but I was in the exact same situation, and had to replace my nav unit

C8V6C,

What Sirius Sat system did you have - iSimple, Vaistech, Audiovox? If you had iSimple, that would lead me to believe their software damages the nav and they should be held liable due to faulty product.

I've had my iSimple disconnected/uninstalled for over a week with no nav issues.

I am also getting this problem on my 2004 LS430. I haven't checked for loose connections as yet, however, can anyone confirm what exactly the problem is (and solution)? I have read that the problem is the connection between the plug and the circuit board...?

In the same board as you Drab4. Probably will take apart the dash and use electrical cleaner and go from there. I think its within the dash and not a function of the nav or amp in the trunk.

I removed the MFD from my car (fairly straight forward, and made MUCH easier with interior removal tools (which are great for so many things, well worth getting), - sent it off to an electronics specialist who found and fixed the problem (integrated circuit board connection) very quickly. Cost £190 (including VAT and insured delivery back to me). - Works perfectly now.

Hmmm i found someone semi local I may have to do the same. Does anyone know if the instrument cluster gauge is tied to the MFD in anyway? This morning my lights were on but at one point the gauge cluster lit up (as if there headlights were not on). I hope i don't have more electrical gremlins

update: this is normal behavior I found out. If your lights are on (non auto) there are sensors to detect how much outside light there is and cranks your gauge lights to full brightness

Update: Intermittent 'External device is not connected' has been resolved for me. It was indeed something in the circuit board of the headunit, NOT the nav in the trunk. It was fixed for $300 and was done by Autobeyours.com. As long as yours functions intermittently they can fix it.

Hopefully this helps someone in the future

Default 04' nav issues update

After much research, and lots of rabbit trails I decided to take out and then send my screen to autobeyours as others have said. The guy seems very confident to fix it. I had the nav screen going black intermittently, sometimes resetting out of no where, and other then that it was working perfectly. I will update once I get it back in next week or so. Taking out the nav was not bad, about a 30 minute deal for a first timer.

Just bought an 04 ML w/ Nav, etc. My first LS was a base (by choice) so I wasn't thrilled about the possible NAV problems on the 04. Today, discovered that I can turn NAV off using screen controls. Black screen but still have access to controls. Still have the back up camera too. An oversize iPhone takes care of navigation. Seems like not running the display all the time will reduce potential problems. Would actually disconnecting NAV (remove the fuses) have any benefits?

Default Congrats on the purchase

Maybe someone can weigh in on that one, it sounds like it could help.., Yea when I bought mine I really didn't know of the issues with the Nav. I should be getting my Nav back this week so I will update with my results from this guy online autobeyours.com
I will see about doing the same with turning it off, There is no need for daily driving to have it up when you don't need Nav. Either way you will love the car, so far the driving experience has been the best. Good luck

Agree. I've turned the NAV off using on screen commands. May disconnect NAV fuses to make sure. Controls and back up cam still work fine. Hopefully not having the display on all the time will reduce chance of possible problems.

Zero problem this summer when I bought the car. Now, if it's under 60 degrees outside, NAV screen is black (or dim) when I turn the key first thing in the morning. The display (audio) generally lights up fully after a couple of minutes. Hasn't gotten better (or worse) since this started happening. NAV display is shut off (I use my phone). Wonder how long it will keep working.......

The issue is with the MFD Unit. If you take out the fuse/s for that you will lose the on-screen music controls and Air-Con. Just use it as normal and get it fixed it it happens.

He didn't think there should be so many problems with the screen and everything turning on an off when it wants to because of the Nav system. He wonders if it is the screen unit itself.

The problems I am having sound just like everyone else's. The system has a mind of its own.

Thanks for any imput you can give.

Jennifer
The mark levinson amp is just for sound as my Nav worked but my sound for radio did not. I replaced it and everything works fine now. as for my gps, i sometimes notice the backlight dims a lil than goes back to normal. i hope it is not on its way out!!!!
