Default power steering wheel not working

2004 LS430 -- The power steering wheel works up/down, but not towards and away from me. Any ideas on what I can try to fix this??

does it work when you put the key in? or neither with the key or manually adjusting it? What I'm trying to get at is whether it is the switch or the motor for in and out thats not working...

I am wondering if it auto swings in and out when you insert the key. (steering wheel should move up and out of the way when you take the key out of the ignition, and return to the preset loction when you insert the key again.) If it functions properly when the key is inserted, it would lead me to believe it is a switch issue as opposed to a motor problem.

when the key is turned it just goes up and down - not in and out.
Is there a way to disable the wheel from moving everytime you turn on/off thr car?

Sounds like it could be a motor issue...I think the dealer can change the CBEST setting to make the steering wheel stay in place and not swing away when you remove the key...

Yes, your dealer can do this. This is the first thing I had done when I bought both my LX and LS. There are countless cases where the motors started wearing out, started making a loud grating noise. They just aren't designed for that kind of motion, day-in, day-out. If you have the auto retraction disabled, the steering wheel still will move with the seat memory. You might want to get the issue repaired and then have the auto retraction disabled to save it.

Does it require a dealer setting change to disable the automatic movement of the wheel up and away when the engine is turned off or can it be done at home?

Why disable the movement to save the motors? You are denying yourself of one of the wonderful functions of the car. Wouldn't it be better to enjoy using it as designed. Then, if and when it fails and you don't want to pay for having it fixed, you can then use it in the fixed position. Why save it for someone else? Just my opinion.

in my last infiniti the seat would move back and forth a couple inches with the key inserted and removed, but i really like the lexus style of moving the steering wheel instead.

Seems the wheel works when it decides to and quits when it decides to.

JayClapp --- I would disable it, so when it doesnt work at all I have the option to fix it instead of being forced to fix it. The wheel may get stuck in a position not comfortable to me.
