Default creaking/popping/grinding noise

I just purchased an '01 ls430 with ~72k miles. Whenever I turn the steering column, I hear a creaking/popping/grinding noise from the front end of the car? What's causing that, and should I be worried?

Did Lexus buy intermediate steering shafts from GM? (Sorry, couldn't resist. My son and I have had a number of GM cars and trucks with this symptom.)

CV joints or ball joint (something of this sort). Either way, it's bad.
