Angry Dealer wants to over-inflate my tires!?

I have a 2004 LS430. My low tire warning light has been coming on. I know this is an issue with the 2004 models. What is the REAL fix for this issue?

My dealer is telling me that my BRAND NEW tires are underinflated for the altitude we are at 5,500ft above sea level. They want to fix the low tire light problem by overinflating the tires by 4PSI. I am NOT happy about this situation and would like insight from anyone here who knows about this stuff.

Thanks!!

There is no actual pressure sensor on the 2004 model. It works by sensing the change in sound frequency at the wheel which is an indication that something has changed and thus the pressure must be low.

The reset button (actually two buttons) is not easy to reach. It is far under the dash near your right knee. I believe the button for tire presure reset is the one that is closer to you. In the manual there is information on the reset procedure which involves going on a long freeway drive after pushing the reset button. That procedure seemed to be unrealistic for me.

The reset button is not always the total solution to making the warning go away. Sometimes after a lot of freeway driving (a few days or weeks) the warning will come back. This happened to me when I got new tires. I had the dealer do the reset with their computer and that solved the problem. It was during that series of events that I confirmed the information I'm posting here. The write up person was not sure and had to check to find the answer (he initially thought there were actual pressure sensors...as many people do).

By the way...the search function is your friend.

comes up on the display.

I had the problem once and somehow found the answer somewhere at that time. I'll try to find the actual procedure .....

Yeah, I found it - It's in the Owners Manual (2004LS, Pg 98):

"After replacing tires or wheels, adjust all 4 tires to specified pressure and initialize the tire pressure warning system. To initialize the system, turn the ignition switch to "ON" and push the tire pressure warning system reset switch for longer than 3 seconds with the vehicle stopped. The following message appears

" ! Pressure Initial "

Don't just do a quick press of the button to get rid of the warning, in other words. The system must be initialized.

Thank you all for the quick responses. I appreciate it.
I'll try the reset button fixes here.

However, does anyone know if the tire pressure realy does need to be higher here at high altitude? Or is this just dealer BS?
