Question Tires, Again?

Greetings,
2 years ago I bought some Falken Ziex ZE-512 for my 2001 LS430 Ultra. They rode smooth and quiet the whole time. I noticed that there has been excessive wear on the outsides of the front tires. This indicated to the tire people that the pressure is incorrect. I've always kept the recommend pressure of 32psi and then increased to 36psi to compensate.

I now have to replace them with something else. I've got the 17" rims and want the all season tire. Not too interested in performance these days, more on smooth ride with low noise. So far, it looks like Discount Tire Direct has some Yoko's for a reasonable price and have a good rating. The Falken's seem to wear too quickly. I've only put 10k miles since I bought them...

With only 10K and excessive wear, IMHO, think your alignment needs to be checked. either the camber or toe-in/out are probably out of spec range.

Do you also rotate tires?

Depending on where you bought your tires, you may be able to get a wear warranty on it and they may prorate you for the excessive wear. What is the wear rating? For 10K, it would be something low like 150. Back in the day when I had some Yokohoma A008, it wore out in 6k but it was ultra high performance.

From what I understand excessive wear on the inside and outside indicates tire inflation issues rather than alignment.

I did rotate the tires after 7k miles and that is when I first noticed the problem. The tire place told me the inflation is low and the alignment is in spec.

Hi DD,
I have been VERY happy with Goodyear Tripletred's. Great all year long, smooth, quiet, and reasonably priced. I rotate and balance (free) every 6000 miles and they look like new (only 13,000 miles on them). I've posted about them before.

I'm actually thinking those are probably the best tires for what I'm looking for. The price is reasonable too. Thanks for the reply. Now its off to visit DiscountTireDirect.com and TireRack.com

Cheers.

agree that excessive wear inside and outside is indicative of underinflation.

however originally, you only said outside wear ...

for smooth riding, suggest Touring type tires.

also look at Treadwear index. the higher the number, the longer the tire should last. YMMV...

Note: you cannot compare one manufacturer's treadware rating against another manufacturer - as they can test differently. use it as a generality.

however it is a good predictor for two tires made by the same manufacturer.

you will notice a correlation between treadware index and warranty mileage.

Michelin just emailed me today with a new tire. I used to run the regular MXV4
on my LS 430. If they make this tire for my LS 460, I will buy 4 when my Dunlop's wear out.

Quieter, more precise, and longer lasting,* the Michelin® Primacy™ MXV4® tire isn't just a better tire. It's also a better value. That's because the Michelin Primacy™ MXV4® tire breaks traditional compromises by simultaneously improving ride, handling and tread life.

It's also the first Michelin® touring tire to carry a 60,000-mile manufacturer's limited warranty† on both H- and V-speed ratings.** So you'll not only enjoy a better ride. You'll enjoy it even longer.

Michelin engineers pioneered a number of technologies to make the Primacy™ MXV4® tire better, safer, and longer lasting.* No matter what you value in a tire, Primacy™ MXV4® delivers.

I would check out the new Michelin if you can get it in your size. It comes with a 60,000 mile warranty. I've never owned a bad Michelin tire. I had some of the old style Turanza's on a Lexus and they sucked! I don't know about the new Serenity Turanza.

I have always been a huge fan of Bridgestone Turanza's. they just came out with a new tire called Serenity. Call Brandon at Tire Rack, a Club Lexus sponsor, they have them on sale and with a rebate the last time I checked. I've never had a complaint in over 10 years with Bridgestones.

Same here and I would check out the new Michelin MXV4 Primacy with a 60,000 mile warranty...
