Their answer is buy an European model or they want to change the whole system which costs almoust half the price of the car.

You can update to any version as long it is for your particular gen (2/3) and region.

I just did the upgrade on my 03. Im sure the "latest" and last upgrade you can do is to 13.1, which was released in 2013. It will be the final release from what im told, but was a MAJOR improvement over my stock 2003 map haha.

Also just for reference I got a burned dvd off craigslist for $20, pretty good deal and easy to justify.

10 years later and DVD's are obsolete. I'm still wondering why new cars include DVD players?

So it seems it is possible to upgrade to a different dvd drive unit and purchase the disc. My example : I have a 2001 LS430 with apparently gen 2 software. It gives
the "disc not found" error. It worked a few months back but has finally stopped, cleaning disc, resetting, nothing works..So if I buy a gen 4 drive unit- for example
the 86841-50090 and plug it in-put the correct dvd disc, will it work ?? Im not concerned about voice - only that the dvd gps map will work. I just want to get rid of the
error message so I can run diagnostics on the radio -tuner-amp components. Thanks for any ideas.

BTW If you notice where these items are located, you will realize that it is not a good idea to carry 2 1/2 gallons of water in the trunk right above these pricey little items. You can ask me how I know these things.

Yes, they're located in a vulnerable spot ... if a cooler tips over. Design should've included either a warning or a vapor/water barrier over those components.

Not only do they get dirty with dust but they are a pain to remove. I just replaced the tuner which sits next to the nav unit and it wasnt easy removing the
side black trunk cover. Concerning the navigation box: does anyone know what the extra connectors are used for on the 86841-50090 unit- my 01 nav
unit even has one connector not used and now I see the 03-05 units have added another connector on the rear.

Extra connector(s) were for the Lexus Link system (on the '01 - '03 model years) which was discontinued - there was a Lexus campaign for dealer-removal/disconnect. When that system is disconnected, there are two (2) wire harness connectors that are unused. (I wrapped mine in my '01 with waterproofing plastic to avoid any moisture-related issues.)

The extra connectors on the Nav DVD player are unused.
