RA40 is right. It is part of the A/C system . Without getting too technical, the expansion valve is what allows the freon to convert from a liquid to a gas. It is during this conversion process that the freon turns very cold. How does it get from a gas back into a liquid again you might ask? That's what the compressor does. The expansion valve often contains a small internal filter and is often the 2nd most probable thing to go out (the compressor being the first most probable).
