Mine does the same. The problem (I'd guess) is one of the bulb sockets has a loose wire. You can probably resolder the connection. If you pop out your rear brake/tailight covers (like if you were to change the bulb) and wiggle the wire around most likely you'll see the lights dim.

I am having the same problem! All my lights are working and functional.
I changed them all just to make sure. I still get the light on the dash
saying they dont work, and when I press the brakes, it feels like the
trans. is downshifting. Also the "R" for reverse lights up when I press the
brakes, even if I am in drive.
Any help would be appreciated.

Tail Light Trouble Indicator
I had the same problem with my '90 LS. I traced it to a faulty ground on one tail light. If you can narrow it down to which side it is, you can replace the wiring harness for that side (about $50 at the Lexus dealer). It's pretty simple and just plugs in. I opted to resolder the wire onto the socket.

I actually traced it down. Apparently the reverse lights, and brake lights on
the trunk did not work. I took the whole trunk interior out, so I could see
everything. I then traced all the wires, and found the ones on the trunk
lid had actually been a victim to the FL heat. The wires were brittle and
cracking. I just ran some new wires for it, and it works now . Sure beats
the $2,100 quote I recieved to fix it. Thanks for your help though guys!

I've got a third brake light out, the one mounted in the rear window. Anyone with a shop manual know how that assembly comes out?
I'm going to order shop manuals tomorrow!
Thanks
