I have found a 1990-1994 play by play guide but not 96 or is 90-94 the same for 96 engine wise, thanks in advance

This is probably the most common. --->http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/engine/timingbelt.html

I use the factory manual which is a slightly different technique. It has your setup the crank and cams to further prevent any valve interference if you move things around during the job. If you don't go crazy with that way listed in that tutorial you'll be fine. Where did you order all of the OEM parts from. I used the Aisin kit from RockAuto for $175 which included parts from the OE without the Toyota box. Included was a bonded gasket for the water pump so I didn't use the sealant like shown in the tutorial. The crank bolt is torqued to 181 ft/lb so it's really tight. You'll want to either have the special crankshaft holding tool to torque the bolt down or lock the crank at the flywheel.

This tutorial does not apply properly to 95-97 LS400s.

There are a couple tutorials floating around here, I forget if we have one linked in the FAQ but I would start there.

I did my 1996 ls400 last month and used the one banshee listed below. It works well enough. I made marks on my old belt before I took it off to be sure I knew where it lined up on the crank. I also had my bank one cam spin on me as I was putting on the belt, but just rotated it back. All in all, the 90-94 one worked quite well.
