I have intermittent "static" noise in the radio, but only on AM; FM is fine. I can reproduce the problem by tapping on the antenna with the radio on. When I switch between AM and FM, I hear a clunk coming from the back of the car, so there must be a relay back there that changes the circuit depending on the band selected.

My conclusion from all this is that something is loose in the antenna, but only in the AM wiring.

Can somebody tell me whether all this is correct and how to go about troubleshooting the problem?
