First of all what deck are you installing? I would recommend purchasing a wire harness kit...they're only about 10 bucks...saves you time and frustration while not missing up factory harness. Just my 2 cents..

When installing an aftermarket sound system do what ever you can to NOT CUT THE FACTORY PLUGS OFF.
Unless the car is just going to a junk yard and not be sold. I would hate to buy a car that I thought was in super shape, that had someone butcher the wires on for a stereo.

Yes, buy the wiring adapter kit for an aftermarket installation. I believe that Metra makes one. It plugs into the factory harness and all the wires are labeled for you.

I've bought a JVC deck and a harness but when I connect the car plugs to the new deck does not light up or turn on properly so I was wondering if I attached the wrong wires together

If you need to make any changes to the wiring, cut and solder the new after market harness NOT the one in the car. They could have goofed up on the new aftermarket harness, you will need to have a schematic of the new radio and the car harness to know. Just don't mess up the harness in the car to fix it, do all that on the new one that adapts the radio.

Be prepared to lose the sub, unless you wire it directly.

See the FAQ section for this subject.
