I was looking at my '98 center panel and noticed the A/C control panel and radio panel seemed to be the same size.

That got me thinking about relocating the radio (which would be a double-din replacement) panel to the top.

Has anyone explored this or noticed anything during a teardown that would prevent this from working?

Yes it's been done, but it's not as simple as they are actually not the same size. The Climate control is wider.

Steve (bigsteve) actually relocated his entire climate control to the center console and made the entire space for his headunit i believe.

Should be doable if you're comfortable with the fabrication of brackets/abs face plates, and wiring extension that may be needed.
