Default Cranks but won't Fire. Air Sensor Replacement?

Hi,

I have a 95 Lexus LS400. Just the other day, the engine wouldn't fire. I was at an Autozone and a mechanic who was shopping offered to take a look and said it had something to do with the fuel delivery system.

Took it to a garage. They said it might be the air sensor replacement, but they're not sure. It runs fine whenever they spray in starter fluid. They said it would be about a $450 job. Does this seem reasonable? Is this a fix me or my dad could do myself? Any other ideas what it might be?

Thanks.

You're not getting fuel to the cylinders. First suspect: fuel pump. I'd start by checking the fuse to the pump and go from there.

how do they quote you $450 for a $50 used part for something they don't even know will fix the problem .

You need a new/better mechanic. Have the error codes read, and look for a new one.

Is the check engine light on? Since you were at autozone you should have had them read the codes.
How did you "took it to a garage"?
First thing to do is check fuel pressure. To attempt a fix you will need proper wire diagram and service info, and can get that at the Toyota tech site. Check battery connections, and all fuses related to fuel pump check fuel pump relay and resistor if it has one. If you have the manuals it will have a chart to follow to figure out the problem. Manuals at the tech site.

If you can reach it try tapping the fuel tank and then start it. Since it has started getting colder here my excursion has developed this very problem. First the cut off relay tripped and then a month later I had to rap on the tank and it has started. Fun job for me.
