Unhappy 1992 Lexus garage find

I just bought a 92 LS 400 that was sitting a garage for over 8 years, I was told it needed a catalytic converter but after sitting for that long there was other problems with it (fuel pump). Finally got it started but has no power at all it wont rev over 1200 rpms and it wont drive past 2mph. I know the cat is going to need replacing but im just wondering would the catalytic converter cause that much loss of power? Would anybody have any recommendations on what to do or start to do. The engine has 132k so i know it has plenty life (decided to buy this after watching "MILLION MILE LEXUS"). What other parts could be restricting the engine so much? Catalytic converter sounds like it has rocks in it.. so thats my first move.

Wow, nice find!... If you ever consider selling those rims..

In terms of maintenance, I'm sure you know that all of the fluids and filters should probably be changed at this point. There are many great resources out there for LS owners, but one that always pops up is LexLS.com.

car is 23 years old. if it was sitting in a garage for 8 years that means the car is basically only 15 years old! just be wary of what happens to an old car when it sits for a long time. you need to flush ALL fluids, replace all the hoses and belts as well as rubber gaskets and you should be good to go. man, I haven't seen chrome factory turbine rims that clean in years. what a find! hows the interior?

A plugged cat will cause the problems you are having. It would be wise to drain the tank and replace the fuel filter while you are at it. I'm sure you've seen where the tank is, you may want to remove it and have it cleaned out as that would be cheap insurance.

Our gold '92 had the same rims come with it. The PO threw them in the trunk when we bought the car. It had LS430 16's when we bought it. Now that my son has it he put on 18's. Good luck with the car. It is a twin to ours.

I pulled the gas tank and replaced fuel pump, fuel filter. It gots a few other issues that I believe will make it purr again.. I have spark plugs, wires, air filter, distributer cap, oil change and trains flush. As for the interior it was my main priority it was in good shape no rips or tearing. Since back seats are out I'm going to take out th entire carpet and shampoo. I'm going to try to fabricate some sort or floor mats out of wood laminate for a crazy look.

Any suggestions for parts that cause problems when sitting or parts for a full out tune up.

Today I discovered the odometer works (132K) and ac does too.

Thanks for the warm welcome to the Lexus family gentleman..

Brake fluid, coolant, differential oil, power steering fluid. Hell, change the window washer fluid too! If it's liquid, it needs to be changed.

Also, in terms of the clogged catalytic converter, check and/or replace the O2 sensors, as they may be malfunctioning and could have caused the failure.

ask yourself: Is any component of the ignition system original?

if the answer is yes, replace parts until answer is no.

Then make sure injectors aren't gummed up and enjoy.

Thank you everyone I am currently working on checking all the parts that everyone mentioned to me. I have found a thread mentioning that "Coil Ignition Packs" from reading them I believe mine has similar symptoms so they are ordered and on the way, Since i have replaced the spark plugs and wires that were most likely original from the signs, all bolts to get to them were never removed. I now believe its not the catalytic converter because i heard they get real hot (redish) when clogged, and thats not happening. I crossing my fingers its the coil packs. I have dismantled the interior and it will be shampooed to its glory days.

Cant wait to put rims on it!!!

Lets make it run first though.

I would check for any error codes. Pre obdII but you should have a diagnostic box. The exhaust system should come apart, most of the OEM systems aren't welded as one full piece, it breaks down into at least 3 pieces. You could remove the exhaust after the manifolds and see if you do indeed have excessive back pressure from clogged cats. Not too many things that would restrict you from going over 1200 rpm, even on the newer models you're normally able to go higher then that even when in limp mode. When diagnosing any kind of drive ability issue I would first check for anything obvious, then focus on Fuel, Spark and Ignition. They are infamous for throttle body problems. Does your butterfly valve move freely when using the gas pedal?
