Default coolant cap

Got a call from my daughter last night and she said there was coolant all over her garage. I got there and found the coolant cap just fell apart when I took it off= spring, washers, everything. Her's is a 1999 Toyota 4runner, but figure it is close enough. I had changed out her entire coolant system two years ago, but I now think the radiator didn't come with a cap so I must have used her old one. I've got a radiator on order for my 96 ls400 and it probably won't have a cap either, so I guess I should buy a new one.

factory radiators DO come with a cap, at least my IS300 OEM radiator did. most aftermarket radiators also come with a cap as well. maybe the LS400 is different bc the cap is not physically on the radiator, but remote on the reservoir tank.

where did you get yours?

If I remember right, it was ordered from either advanced auto or one of the big chains. I know it wasn't bought through Toyota.

I guess this gets a little confusing because we were talking about two different cars, but both having bad radiators. I know my LS400 doesn't have a cap on the radiator, just thinking I might proactively change it out. What the heck do you call it= overflow cap?

The LS coolant system isn't regulated by a pressure cap. However a 96' 4runner is, make sure when you replace the cap that you get the correct one. They're rated in pounds, and it determines how many pounds of pressure your system will hold, therefore causing the system to have a different temperature all together. Too light of a radiator cap and your thermostat wont properly open.

I wish you would correct what ever it is your saying here.

Yes the LS coolant system pressure is regulated by the cap on the tank.

And why ramble on about a 96 road runner and say how you have to treat the LS like its the same, after just saying the cap does nothing?
I really don't understand the post, sorry............

I went to Toyota for that. Some things I don't have a problem going aftermarket- but something like that I only go OEM.

He first says the LS system ISN'T (isn't, means" is not") regulated by the cap. (and this was misleading, system ???? what is meant by system? caps are most always pressure regulators, thermostats are flow regulators they both comprise the SYSTEM and of course there is more to the system.
But the use of the word system is cleared up by how the 96 is explained, I guess??

Then he talks about a 96 4 runner. Then he says they are rated in pounds, and says YOUR
(system) YOUR (thermostat) And since your would be the normal LS owner reading this information would not that mean your LS?

I'm confused to, about the whole post.

And I say the statement below in caps. Caps isn't that the topic ????? "lol"
THE PRESSURE CAP DOES CONTROL THE PRESSURE FOR THE LS400'S, I have no idea about the newer ones though.

So did I clear it up for you?

I understand what your saying but I took it all to mean that he was referencing the system on the 4runner after his first sentence.
