Default 1994 LS400: Water pump failing

Ok, my water pump appears to be going out.....I replaced it in JAN. '14 and it is going out again. It is making a wobbly, grinding noise on the pulley. It's not leaking yet.... Do I need to replace the timing belt and thermostat too?

I'm assuming you replaced the timing belt when you did the water pump back in 2014? Assuming you did, did you replace any of the idler pulleys, and or the tensioner when you did that T Belt replacement. Chances of a water pump failing that soon are pretty slim. I would immediately suspect one of the other pulleys if they weren't replaced. At least worth checking. I guess they have to tear down half the damn engine to get to it anyway....

I replaced the timing belt...some backyard mechanic suggested the water pump going out....no pulley or tensioner replacement

It was a timing belt kit with waterpump, so I thought it was a little soon for the water pump too

In a kit most all pulleys etc are there. If your changing the water pump or any other pulley up there, I'd go new Tbelt every time with all the work involved why not? If your not paying someone else to do it you can afford not to scrimp on the parts, and any pulley that touches that T belt needs to be replaced at the 90k mile point or 180k mile point, its just not worth not replacing them. And are you sure the fan support bearing is not the culprit?

So should the fan wobble and feel loose if this is the problem?

The bearing going out will not wobble, been there done that, it just makes noise. I suppose if it is allowed to go on for another 100 miles or so then it would wobble and or fall out. But it could be anything run by a belt up front. Take the serpentine belt off and see if the noise stops.

yep, fan bearing or other idler pulleys should be to blame for a noise so soon after a WP replacement.

You can usually find them for less online. Nice to know NAPA has them, what brand?

im pretty sure the timing belt kits come with new tensioners, is there a reason why they were not replaced when the t belt was done???
