Default What in the heck is going on with these rear shocks? (1995 LS400)

Oooookayyyyyyy....

After not too much moaning and gnashing of teeth, I got the passenger rear shock out of my '95 LS400. Standard suspension, no air. Compress the spring, out everything comes. I get the replacement shock out of the box. And....

They look nothing alike.

Oh, there's a shock absorber in the box, all right. It came in a full set of budget ASTs I ordered off of Ebay. I had no problem with the front units, but the rears they send me have this absurdly wide lip for the spring to sit on, so wide that nothing matches up. I went online and the pictures for multiple sellers have this same wide lip on the rear replacements, but then other ones have pictures that look more like my rear shocks. My rear shocks are similar to the fronts, only stouter. But they have the same narrow lip.

I'd post pics, but I'm at work right now and the car is in the garage, where it has been for days. I'm hesitant to order new shocks for fear I'll get the same wide-lippers that I've got now. I also don't want to mix brands--unless you guys say there's nothing wrong with that--out of concern for wonky driving dynamics. I guess my question is, is it possible that somebody replaced an air suspension on this thing years ago and I'm not actually looking at an OEM shock on the car anymore? It's 20 years old and has 250K miles, but it rode like such crap I figured the shocks had to be original.

My Christmas present is a set of tires and a windshield, but I have to get the car out of the garage and be able to drive it in order to get those things. Any advice would be much appreciated.

They might have given you a strut for a different year... the air suspension looks wayyyyyyyy different. Might want to call the manufacturer and verify

I suppose it's possible that if you have a very late model manufactured in 94 it could be UCF11 suspension. I honestly don't know if that's any different from UCF20 suspension though.

you bought the cheapest shocks possible, why are you surprised it isn't correct

Part numbers would help, but I would just go buy the correct set of KYBs

Here they are side-by-side. OK to have better shocks on rear than front?
