98 LS400 moonroof panel rattling, worse after cleaning + silicone spray
Hi all,
I recently had an issue with my 1998 LS400's moonroof panel. The issue was the panel would rattle when it was hot outside, or when the sun was shining directly on it, causing it to heat up.
Generally this happened when it was around 70-80+ Fahrenheit outside, or hotter, and as I ran the AC in the car, it would stop making noise altogether.
I talked to an auto glass professional that I know. We found that the panel has a lot of play in it, when pressing up when the panel is in its fully closed position. He said to clean the panel +molding/seals with glass cleaner, and then apply silicone spray to the molding/seals, and lubricate the mechanism with multi purpose lubricant (WD40 style stuff).
I did that, and it seemed to help with the play in the panel slightly, but now my panel is rattling like crazy when I drive, and there is more wind noise. It gets worse as I go faster.
Any ideas on what to do? This is one of those situations where cleaning something seemed to have a detrimental effect. Should I just apply more silicone spray?

So is the rattle when it is closed? If so the seal is worn. You could do my wire tie shim deal to tighten it up.
If it is the movement mechanism that is allowing movement up and down, then the sliding roof guides could be worn ???

And I would not use silicone spray. Use a rubber protectant or rubber lube.

Thanks for the responses everyone.
It rattles when it is in its fully closed position. Below is a video example of the movement in the rear of the panel. My phone's camera isn't very good so apologies in advance for the low quality.
Any ideas on where I would use a shim? I'd rather not take everything apart. I also checked all of the screws I could get to, and they all seemed perfectly tight.

That is the track mechanism that has some wear that's what it looks like to me. I think, unless the nuts are loose. You can check by removing the plastic side covers. I use a plastic pry bar and carefully just hook the plastic cover and pry it about 2 inches from front and rear, that will expose the nuts.

This thread is magic. I was also able to replace the seal without removing the sunroof (because I tripped one of the screws). Because of the clear direction and photos in this thread, I was able to complete the task at dusk into the night with the aid of a small lamp. Total time after giving up on removing the stripped screw was about 35 mins.
Purchased weather seal from Amazon for $35 shipped. However, I think they noticed their error and have now applied an exorbitant shipping fee.

One of the worst "on by default" features IMO.
