Default Catalytic Converter Advice

Took my car to the dealer today. and they're telling me that both cats and the EGR tube need to be replaced at a cost of $ 5200. I'm getting multiple misfires which I believe is the result of the exhaust leak from the EGR tube. They're claiming the reason the cost is so high is due to the access needed for the tube as they have to lift the engine. However, reading here, it seems no one has had to do all of that. How likely is it that I can solve my misfire issues by dealing with the exhaust leak from the tube? Is there an easier way to deal with the tube other than dropping the trans or jacking the engine? There's no way I'm paying 5200.

I would suggest you get a second opinion, $5200 seem way too high. I had a mechanic take off my egr pipe and he had a shop weld the crack to seal it and he put it back on a $100, and its working just fine.
Mabey try finding an independent mechanic who knows these cars to look at it.
As for as your catalytic converters, do you have any engine codes? Year and mileage would be helpful too.
If you need converters, mabey you can try out RockAuto.

It's a 96 with 246k miles. I have multiple misfire codes and codes for low cat efficiency. To fix the pipe alone, Lexus wants $1800

stay away from the dealer unless you have lots of $ to burn. i went to the dealership to ask how much just in labor to replace the EGR and they said $1200 bc their book states a 7hr job requiring transmission removal! we here all know that is unnecessary, so you best option is to take it to a toyota specialist which should take them only 1hr or so!

as for your misfire, the most common issue there is your spark plugs! when was the last time they were changed? they are faily easy to replace so start there (again take it to a local mechanic first) then see if the codes go away. the catalytic converters on these cars should last the life of the engine, if the engine is properly maintained. do not attempt to replace them at this stage.

I've got an appt with my local Toyota shop on Saturday. Before taking it in, I think we'll have a talk. I think all of my issues will go away once I deal with the tube.

For the misfires I would take a look at the drivers side Ignition coil. The catalyst and misfire codes could be the result of the coil being bad.

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls-...-egr-pipe.html

It won't cost $4,200 even if you drive crossing state line and let me replace them for you. Everything included.

This is the reason your converter efficiency is low. Unburned, raw fuel going through the converters is killing them.

Your EGR tube shouldn't be causing the misfire. A leak here would just cause your combustion chamber temps to rise which may cause pinging and a for sure increase NOx emissions.

I would fix the misfires first then tackle the exhaust leak. You may or may not have to replace the converters after all is said and done.

This is absolutely correct, and is the sole purpose of the egr . It will not cause misfires, and a cracked pipe will only make some noise and possibly burn nearby surfaces; which are not driveability issues (technically). Passing an emissions test might be a challenge though.
