Default A/C condenser fan question

Today I was attempting to bleed the cooling system to fix the occasional overheating problem I've been experiencing in traffic. I had the a/c turned off while doing this (I made sure the heater valve was open though). My question is that even if the a/c is off, should the condenser fan kick on when the engine reaches a certain temperature or only kick on when the a/c is turned on?

condenser fan turns on when the car reaches a certain temp, just like any electric automatic fan. this is normal. it can even turn off when the AC is on, which is normal too. it all depends on the temp and how much air is being pushed through the front (i.e. while driving).

I think I may have found the problem with my car then. I'm assuming the ECT tells the fan when to turn on so I may look into replacing that. The fan comes on normal when the a/c is on.

ECT is a sensor used by the ECU and not for the fan. the fan sensor is on the bottom of the radiator.
