Default Rear wheel bearing replacement with knuckle on car

1995 LS400
planning rear wheel bearing replacements and wondering if this can be done without disconnect all of the suspension parts
I would like to do the following steps similar to here

http://mkiv.com/techarticles/rear_wh...ing/index.html

remove wheel
remove hub nut
remove axle from differential side
remove caliper
remove disc
remove parking brake shoes

now at this point can i use a big hammer/or puller to push the axle in towards the differential where it is already disconnected?
also can I then use the puller to remove the hub?

remove the circlips

use a wheel bearing tool like this to push out old bearing and install a new one

then reassemble?

is this possible? or does the entire knuckle need to come off?

I guess we will find out. Should work, and where did you get the kit?

I havent bought it yet but you can rent/borrow from autozone/oreillys or buy from harbor freight

maybe boils down to how much force the tool can apply compared to a hydraulic press?

the knuckle has to at least be unbolted for the axle to come out, the axle is not collapsible much at all so you can't just "push" it out with the knuckle still in place.

The wheel bearing races have to be pressed in and done so perfectly concentric to the hole they are going in, they cannot be canted. This will be quite difficult to do with the knuckle still on the car.

How much horizontal play will the axle have once unbolted from the differential?

I thought there was just a single sealed bearing in each knuckle? not separate races and bearings?

VERY little horizontal play. Almost negligible but likely a couple mm.

The bearing race is the metal component the *****/needles sit in/on. The Outer race is the metal ring portion of the bearing that is in contact with the knuckle.

Changed lots of things in the rear on my 99LS, brought knuckles to a mechanic to press in bearings. Assembled everything today and took it for a test drive. Left rear metal -to- metal noise, I first thought it was the big dust cover around rotor on knuckle, but closer inspection revealed the noise is coming from axle rubbing on something inside knuckle.
Do you think the dust deflector wasn't pressed all the way in?
Seems like whe the axle rotates, there is one spot where it rubs on something.

sounds like it wasn't reassembled properly.

Turned out to be a bent backing plate (shield behind rotor). And that was the first place I looked, I don't know how I missed it!!!
All looks good, did alignment, summer wheels on and rady for my roadtrip CO- CA!
