1996 LS400 Front End series of pops when braking.
1996 LS400 Non-air Suspension, 180,000 miles, no known front suspension replacement done up to this time.
I've looked through the FAQ and have searches around but I'm not finding a definitive answer for my problem. Please take a minute and read below to help me figure out which part is going bad.
This started about 500 miles ago and is consistent now in it's noise.
When driving constant speed, speed tables, low speed turning, high speed cornering, bumps and during light braking at speed there is not any sound at all.
When I am approaching a stop sign, I will start to apply brake. About 1/3 the way to the stop, I will hear a muffled pop from the front passengerside corner. This will continue to pop maybe 3-4 more time in the remaining 2/3 of the stop. All pops are about the same tone and volume. When I accelerate from the stop, I will usually, 50%, get a final pop. The pop will not return until I brake again for a stop.
I jacked up the car and applied torque to the bolts that I could get a ratchet on and none of them moved. This did not make a difference. I did notice that there was some grease near the lower ball joint on that side, like the book was torn. I do not know how long it has been like this. The front strut rod bushing are worn and have not yet been replaced.
So, What else can i test to get a better idea on what's going on here? I went ahead and ordered some front brake pads and hardware on the off chance it's the pads just bouncing around.
Thank you in advance.

The best way to check those bushings and joints is with a pry bar. Just get in the area around the ball joints, tie rods and the rubber bushing and pull. Your looking for excessive play in the steel parts and tearing or cracks in the bushings. Also check the wheel bearings. Jack the car up and put your hands at nine and three. Now try to move the tire. Listen and feel for noise or play in the assembly.

My guess would be the front sway bar bushings. Ball joints "can" make a noise, but you'd notice many other symptoms when they're completely bad. However, if you see grease coming out of ball joint boots you should still replace them.

A metal pry bar also bends the sheet metal and scratches the paint off so rust will form. If you have to pry use something that is not made of metal. You will find that if the member is unloaded, you will be able to move it by hand if there is looseness.
