Just to let anyone who's interested, I had flickering headlights with the occasional headlight going out. I stuffed around changing ballasts 3 times... I decided to put new globes in... and walla ! fixed..
I thought globes either worked or they didn't... apparently not... Anyway, a new pair of HID bulbs solved all my headlight issues.

yep, flickering bulbs usually means the bulbs are toast. i had the same problem on my is300 sportx to find that BOTH bulbs were cracked! replacing the bulbs remedied the problem. OEM ballasts hardly ever go bad!
