Default 1992 celsior (Ls400) running rich and not much power

Hi every one. I have a 1992 Toyota celsior (imported version of a Ls400 and exactly the same)

Late last year (mid December) on my way in to work my car was driving mint. No issues at all. I then wanted to over take the person In front of me and put my foot down to find there was barely any power. I took it to my friend who is a mechanic and experienced in these vehicles who told me that the exhaust manifold was leaking quite badly and that the oxygen sensor wouldn't be reading right because of this. So I got a new set and installed them but the vehicle runs the same (albeit a little quieter but you get what I mean) and I find myself at a loss as to what it could be. It will use a full tank in 130km and just doesn't sound as if it is running right in general (low idol and kind of like a pinking sound from the exhaust) if anyone has had this issue and thinks that they can help I would greatly appreciate your input. I have also taken the cats out and removed the inside of them and replaced another part of the exhaust that was also leaking.

You should have some codes if it's running that bad. Maybe your MAF sensor is really dirty. Do you smell gas inside of the car?

There was a strong fuel smell but now that the manifolds have been done it there is no fuel smell inside. But if you stand near it there is a strong smell. I also haven't had any codes scanned as yet (I live in New Zealand and everything is closed for Anzac weekend)

Check your fuel trims. I strongly suggest that you test you MAF sensor. Is the car running rough? I know it seems like a lot but I would also pull all the spark plugs to see if any are fouled.

The car runs ok. I find once it's warm and you stop at a set of lights it will misfire quite badly. I have also replaced 1000 km ago the cam belt distributor coils and spark plugs (plugs are platinum ngkr) just as maintainence and it still seems to do it. However the maf sensor didn't really occur to me so I will get that tested asap

Ok. So being that I am a bit of a noob with cars I kept searching through Google to find a simple way to check maf problems and stumbled across this which was extremely helpful. http://www.troublecodes.net/lexus/

My car came up with code 24 (IAT sensor signal failure) and code 31(maf sensor signal failure)
So does this mean replacing the entire part or cleaning it out

IIRC I don't think those older model MAF sensors are cleanable, and should you attempt you may ruin it. Might want to try ebay to find one.

I would just change both sensors. The IAT sensor should not be that expensive. You have the Karmen Vortex type maf that can not be cleaned. First you want to check that both sensors are plugged in and check the wiring. Sometimes when working on the engine we can damage wires or forget the reconnect sensors. Here's a good sight that wiil help you a lot with things going on with the car.
