96 LS400, annoying whining coming from trunk, slightly extended crank
Hey guys, working on getting my LS in top shape and it's come time to deal with the annoying whine pervading through the cabin.
Patterns noticed:
only happens when the car is started, key in acc or on does _not_produce the noise.
Sounds a lot like a speaker that's not grounded correctly (and kinda changes pitch with engine RPM as well), however there are no speakers in the car (previous owner removed them before selling it to me)
Possibly related: the car has to crank a little more than seems healthy to start when it's sat for awhile. after starting it fires up just fine if I shut it off then crank again, even when cold.
some lack of power in the top RPM range.
Now, you can probably see where I'm leaning to given I included the extended crank in the related symptoms here: fuel pump? Would a dodgy fuel pump cause the extended crank and lack of power? best way to test for this? (no codes stored in computer).
It's also worth noting that there's no sound insulation left between the trunk and back seats, ripped out, so I'm not sure if the whine is even abnormal (and it's just usually not audible from the cabin)
any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

the fuel pump is directly behind the back seat firewall. it does have a high pitched sound but usually isn't uncomfortable. it may be going out.
extended crank could be many other things like a dirty intake tract, poor spark plugs, coils, dist cap, and rotors. how long is an extended crank time? if you have to hold the key for over 2 seconds, then that's extended in my eyes.

although this thread is three years old its still relevant today cause I'm currently having the same issue, but it tells me my fuel pump is definetly on its way out then. To the original starter of this thread how did everything turn out? Still have the car? UPDATE PLEASE!!!
