I just figured i would post this for anyone having random, issues with their LS, or any car. I'll make this as short as I can. Kroger just sent my wife and I a BUNCH of Kroger Points. Well, just like many, we decided to use it for fuel. I recently made a post about my '99 having some misfiring issues. I had random misfires on cylinders 3,5,and 7. I changed the plugs and got some other advice from forum members. Nothing seemed to help. So, i asked my wife if she, somehow/accidentally, put regular gasoline in the car. Knowing how particular i am about this, she said no and that she filled it up with premium. Fast forward to an empty tank of gas, i decided to go to Shell and get gas there. The next day, on my way to work, the VSC and CE light went off and have yet to come back on.

I purchased a '98 LS a couple of days ago. Before my 4hr trip back home, i filled up at Kroger (i know, stupid). Before i filled up, the car had about a 1/4 tank of gas in it. On the way, everything was fine. When i got home, it had about a 1/2 tank of gas in it. I drove it to work the next day and the CE light came on. There was no rough idle like the '99, but it did idle low and has continued to. So, i'm guessing that when the 1/4 tank of gas mixed with the 3/4 tank of watered down Kroger gas, the car didn't like it. Based on these two vehicles(we'll call them test subjects) and their issues, I can only assume it's the gas at Kroger that is causing the symptoms. I searched the web and other's have had very similar issues when using the same gas in different city and states.

I am posting this for members that are having fuel/sensor/misfire issues. Maybe others that have had similar issues can chime in. I hope this helps some you out!

I stopped getting gas from BJs because it seemed like the car did not perform right. I have no evidence that it was the gas. I started using the BP by my house exclusively for a while until i filled up one day and burned a 1/4 tank in under 50 miles. So i wondered if that independent BP might have been adding water to that batch of gas. Yeah I know it's a conspiracy theory and I have no proof but even with city driving i would get 60-70 miles with just city driving and i burned that 1/4 tank mostly on the highway.

To test my theory I filled up with REGULAR at the no name station I sometimes use by my house, did the the same route and got about 100 miles in that 1/4 tank.. I know fuel consumption has a lot to do with the condition of the car, hot or cold starts, speed etc.... but I just found it too much of an anomoly so now I'm using the wawa by my house.

I thought it was just my '99, in general, that was fuel sensitive, but i'm guessing most of them are. I know several cars that I get into have a CE light on, but seem to run fine. It could be something as simple as the fuel they use. On the flip side, there are those that spend hundreds of dollars having shops say, "well, we have to replace this and that to see what happens" only to find out that was not the culprit. I'm going to stick with the Shell station, and continue to watch each vehicles behavior to the gasoline.

@dicer, never said you wrong, but i'm almost 95% sure the bad gas was the root of it. I will be more sure about it when i empty and refuel the '98. Thanks man!

never heard of this brand of gas, as i am from the west coast. stick to known gasolines. i've been told by a chevron chemist that the rejected gas from their refineries get sold to secondary sources such as arco, costco, etc hence the cheaper price. the gas will still work and will only show signs of difference in the long run. it would not be immediate as you experienced so there might be other factors here...

@timmy0tool, The CE happened before when I purchased the '99. By accident, i put regular in it and the CE light popped up after about 75-100 miles of driving. That was my mistake and i knew it because my father had a 96 that did the same thing.

usually running 87 (or whatever lower octane is regular) would not trigger a CEL unless the knocking and detonation is very bad. something is irregular in the gas for sure. i would stay away.
