Default Reverse Lights

why do my reverse lights stay on? when I put my car in reverse a different set of clear lights come on with them too.. The ones never shut off though, as long as the car is running.

It is important to provide the model year when asking questions or to put it in your forum "signature" so that people know what you have.

Your profile says you have a 1990 LS400 ... I had to look. The first thing to check on a generation one LS400 when there are rear light problems (or weird transmission shifting problems) is the wiring harness at the left trunk hinge. Unwrap the tape from the harness and see if any of the wires are broken or cracked. Look closely. If the wire insulation is cracked then the wire core is probably breaking and needs repair.

If any are broken/cracked, then splice in short lengths of wire. Soldering them in is best. Breaking wires at the left trunk hinge is EXTREMELY common on the gen 1 LS400. The ones on my 1990 LS400 started breaking at about the 13 year mark and the person I sold my 90 LS to told me that he had to continue to occasionally repeat repairing the wires.

i am thinking since you mentioned a second set of clears, that you have aftermarket taillights where there is a clear portion where there should be a red bulb. or maybe you have a broken lens too?

high possibility you have a short as kansas mentioned. 1st gen cars 90-94 have a problem with the trunk wire harness getting brittle due to age and shorting on each other. check the driver's side trunk hinge as mentioned.
