You can use anything! You can fill your trans with hog **** if you like, it is your car after all.

However, it has been proven fairly regularly that the OEM toyota type-IV is the best fluid to use and there is really no point to using something else... It's not like the type-IV cost $50/L like some German trans fluids!

Its just not smart to experiment with some other fluid, when it is well known what is the correct fluid to use. I just can't see why anyone would do it. Unless you would rather work on it than drive it, or pay a transmission shop $2000 or more then try any brand trans fluid you like, just keep us posted on how long the transmission lasts.

Thanks for the 411, yeah $7 vs toyota atf $8 is not worth saving a couple of bucks, why change what already works for the car the transmission runs perfect 185k ill just get the oil at local dealer.

In the UK the Toyota type IV costs £12.00 ( $18.00) a liter and I still buy it at that price just for complete piece of mind.

Do a partial drain-2 to 3 quarts only and do NOT do a power flush!!

You don't have to buy it at a Lexus dealer, a Toyota dealer will have it.

Shop around. Since you have to do this routine with some regularity the Toyota parts dept will give price breaks on case/12 bottles. Best I've had is $3.89 but typical bottle in case quantities is $4.25. Also buy a handful of crush washers while there ~$.75. The Lexus dealer will charge $2+.
