93 LS400 looking for easiest cheapest way to lower the gearing - rear end. Did some searching and found this quote from 3UZFTE
The other part that's going to make it tough to drift in stock form is the open 3.27 diff. If it's seriously going to be a drift car, and not a daily, you should just weld up the stock diff, and possibly find a lower ring gear like a 4.27 out of a SC300 5-speed I believe.
My car is real rough and I'm taking it off the road 330k and won't pass inspection. But I want to have some fun first and do some back road drifting before it's completely wrecked. I want lower geared limited slip or posi rear end. So maybe a lower ring gear welded up?
So what are the options with the LS rear end? What parts fit from SC or Supra or others? Thanks
cheapest way is to weld the diff. trying to get a better geared rear end for a car that will be junked anyway doesn't make economical sense. the motor has plenty of torque to slide around!
Well actually it may be a fun car for a few years. My competition is a '90 305 Caprice. With stock gearing the Lexus is pretty lazy up to 5,000 rpm. I would invest a few hundred dollars for the fun I'm anticipating I will have. Guaranteed! It would be nice to be able to lay some hundred foot dark posi's in the old parking lot out back
Who has experience/ideas so I can try something out?
I'm worried about strength of the differential if I weld it.
My expereince welding old |Chevy v-8's like malibu caprice etc. is that they break easily where the axle connects inside the pot. Especially if the car goes over uneven ground under power.
Can I have thoughts re: the Lexus independent rear withstanding this stress differently than the Chev straight axles
unless you're mechanically competent enough to break down and properly reassemble a differential, you're out of financial luck.
An SC300 ring gear would work fine but the whole diff is NOT interchangeable with early LS400s, so you'd be out ~$3-600 to have the ring gears swapped in the diff carrier. Welding the diff is the only choice you have as far as traction because you won't find a suitable LSD within anything close to your budget.

If I get the 11 tooth pinion gear from an SC300 as shown in the pic below, would that work in my LS400? The ring gear in both the '93 SC300 and LS400 are both 47 tooth.....where the pinion in the LS400 is 13 tooth as quoted here "DIFFERENTIAL FINAL GEAR KIT REAR, FGR:47:13:3.615"
My rear end has been welded now for about a year. It gets abused on a regular basis. If you have somebody that can weld, it will hold up fine. The most important part is to get it extremely clean and also to get some good penetration on the welds. I also added some small pieces of steel to reinforce the welded spider gears.
I'm confident my welded diff will last a long time..... The axles on the other hand.... That's a different story.

No, never did.... after buying some used ring gears I gave up. We burned about 20 sets of tires off it first though 😄 no limited slip or welding just stock rear end...then took it to a demolition and cleans up❗❗💪💪. Lexus-tough 😄
