Default Wife's 98 has noisey AC compressor, how long do i have?

Wife's 98 LS just developed what I have diagnosed as a bad bearing in the AC compressor clutch. At idle you can hear it when you first turn it on but then is silent until you give it throttle at which point it provides a nice whine that makes her black beauty sound like a Twin Turbo Supra

Still cools perfectly and I am ordering the parts this week, but does anyone have any experience on how long before it flat out dies and is there any resulting collateral damage (other than replacing the entire AC which I am going to do) to other systems?

She is eyeing my 98 with 98k miles and it is making me nervous

Thanks.

so you only hear it upon turning on the AC? it's silent when off? it could be an idle bearing instead which i am hoping.

You definitely here is when turning it on and then again when driving (whine increases with RPM).
