Does that whole unit seal to the roof to keep any water from leaking out if there is a buildup of fir needles or what ever if the drains get plugged up?

Yes it does seal to the roof but if enough water were to build up you would start to see the leak in your headliner just like some other members.

Sha, dicer and aptso, thank you guys for putting so much effort into this post. Do you guys have any knowledge that I 95-97 moon roof assembly might fit my car? I have the ability to pick one up locally and would love to start from scratch.

I still need to lube the tracks and see where that gets me. Even in the case that doing that gets me somehwre I'm still quite unhopeful because of the fact that it doesn't sit flush with the hood and when the tilt button is pressed nothing happens - I even put my ear close to the parts to try and hear any type of squeal or anything...nothing.

Thanks guys

Matt

I guess it depends on what year car you have. All gen 1's will fit gen 1's. I guess all gen 2's will interchange amongst themselves. I don't know about interchange between the Gen's though. Maybe search the parts books on Sewell.

Any 95-00 sunroof will fit. If you don't hear the motor at all then it's probably dead. Just take the motor out using the instructions and then you will be able to slide the tracks back and forth. Spray the tracks real well worth some silicone lube. If the tracks are easy to slide back and forth then you can just swap in a junkyard motor. Have you checked the fuse for the sunroof to make sure it's not blown?

If I knew what I know now when I was fixing my sunroof/motor I would have just the whole junkyard assembly back in one piece. I tried to fix the track since it was stuck and that cost me a couple months! If you just change the motor you wiLloyd probably still have to go to the dealer to get it reprogrammed. I last another month trying to program mine and could not get it to work with all the instructions I found online.

Right. I need to just upload a video and do a walkaround instead of me describing what's going on as they say a picture is worth a thousand words right.

The tilt function does absolutely nothing, although the moonroof will open all the way without problem, but it will not close without my hand assist. Do you think it's possible that from people trying to break into it they damaged the rail/s?

As of right now this is what I have :

Opens all the way

does not sit flush with the roof when closed

tilt function totally dead

Closes only with help from my hand.

Thanks again.

Matthew

I don't think anyone was trying to break in to the car from the sunroof. You would see the damage on the roof and the sunroof glass would have shattered before anything else. A video would be nice. It sounds like the motor is working and that your cables just need to be lubed A LOT. Mines would not close all the way and would sit right below the roof line. My tilt would not work either. I bought another sunroof and the motor and controls did the same thing so I took it to the dealer and they charged me $100 for the diagnostic and reprogrammed it for me. I also had to adjust the glass myself. It's sealed tight but the glass has a little movement so it rattles but I think that has more to do with the seal around the glass being worn.

Wow, thanks sha. The sunroof sitting right below the roof line sounds exactly like mine. Yeah, I have no proof of an attempted break in, that was a guess from the start, I shouldn't have put so much emphasis on that.

I'll get that video up ASAP. Do you think that you could have gone without buying a new one and just lubing it a lot? I may have read your post incorrectly. The most important part for me right now is getting it to sit flush with the roof as the road noise is getting old.

Thanks again guys

Matt

I was over thinking mines too much. If I would have took my time and lubed it I definitely would not have needed to buy one from the junkyard. My rails were seized from not using the sunroof for over 2 years.

Great news, I got it to sit flush with the roof this afternoon. I sprayed a ton of penetrate and silicon all along the rails and cables. Anyway, with it closed, I hold down the close button and repeatedly hit in a vertical manner on the interior moonroof shade that I positioned so where the plastic cubby where you put your fingers to open and close it goes was right in the back where it was sagging before. After about 6 really good hits it caught and lifted itself to the normal height. Mind you, when it caught it didn't make any horrible sound just the normal sound of the motor and mechanisms working to lift it.

I'll have to get on that video ASAP. Now when it is completely flush with the roof it doesn't have to strength or maybe it is seized - anyway it doesn't have the strength to lower itself to the correct height to open.

Sha, it sure is acting like it is just gunked up and the the lubing is helping it. I'll let it sit overnight before tweaking it anymore and hopefully get a video up on Thursday.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I have to ability to get a moonroof complete assembly from a 2nd Gen for about $100. Maybe I should check that out afterall.

$100 is good if you go that route. It's easier to just drop the whole sunroof assembly and put the whole used one in there and remember to remove the glass first which will make it lighter. Or just keep lubing the heck out of the original and try not to force anything by banging or pulling. Just take your time if you can.
