Default 1990 ls400

Hello all,

I'm new to the LS400 section. My current project is a LS460L. I need advice from some of the veterans. I'm looking at a 1990 LS400 with 104K mikles, owner replaced the timing belt at 75K miles. Is there anything I need to know or issue with this year that I should pay attention to? And yes, I have search and read many threads already. Thanks in advance.

Welcome over to this side.

Fluids, suspension bushings, the ECU thread. Specific first gen problems like the dash cluster issues and trunk wiring harness. The rest is basically regular maintenance.

just to elaborate on the ECU comment from mike, the first gen LS400s are known to have bad capacitors in the ECU which gives a slew of problems that may be mistaken other things. the fix is fairly simple if you are good at soldering circuit boards!

age is more of a factor in this problem rather than mileage alone, so it's not exempt being a low mileage car.

This. And the power steering, as mentioned. Also the climate control LCD blacks out, but it's an easy fix and it still works fine if it's blacked.

Overall they're amazingly solid cars.

Oh, yeah - you'll probably want to convert the AC to current spec if it hasn't been done yet.
