Default 98 Ls400 Headlight bulbs

check the headlight lense. if it says "D2R", that means you have HID. otherwise, it should say "9006" for non HID. from your description, it seems like your came with the HID option.

as for nice bulbs.. it all depends on how much you want to spend on bulbs. i typically get my bulbs and ballasts from DDM Tuning here in southern cali. unbeatable prices and lifetime warranty. never had any problems.

If I remember correctly, HB4 will be stamped on the lenses of 98-00 LS400's with standard halogen headlights instead of 9006.

If the car has OEM HID headlights, you should notice that the headlights go through a self leveling up-and-down initialization each time you start your car at night.

OEM HID bulbs can last the life of a car. The D2R bulbs in my nearly 14 year old 2000 LS400 are the original factory installed bulbs and they still work great.

The plastic headlight lenses on these cars tend to become cloudy allowing much less light to pass through. If your lenses are dull and not perfectly clear, a refinishing kit can make them look and perform like brand new.

I've used a several different headlight lens restoration kits and the absolute best one I've used is one from Sylvania: https://www.sylvania.com/en-us/produ...ation-kit.aspx

One Sylvania kit has enough materials to restore the lenses of both the headlights and the fog lights. The fog lights on these cars are not the greatest but refinishing mine made a stunning improvement.

If you use a Sylvania refinishing kit or one of the others, be sure to raise the hood while you do it and mask the paintwork around the lenses at all stages of the procedure - regardless of what the kit instructions tell you. This eliminates the possibility of damaging the paint during the sanding process or with chemicals included in the kit.

I strongly recommend against using a headlight restoration kit that requires an electric drill or polisher unless you are really, really experienced with using them on headlight lenses.

If you have OEM HID headlights and really do need bulbs, stick with the standard 4300K bulbs. Higher "K" bulbs produce less light and you don't want your LS to look like a Honda "ricer".
