Question Steering wheel not retracting?

My steering wheel is not raising up and retracting when I cut off the car. It just started doing this about a week ago. The up and down/ in and out feature works fine manually. It only moves up about a centimeter when I take the key out. I did a search and all I saw was something about cleaning some contacts in the cylinder. I can't see anything being wrong with the gears because the switch still moves the steering wheel anyway you want it.

If you can still manually move the wheel up/down & in/out, the the problem is likely in the ignition cylinder, as you already found.

Is it hard to clean or take apart?

Interested In This too. Mine works great manually and moves out of the way when key off.. But when I fist get in the car and start it the wheel only moves about 1/2". If I press the preset 1 button it will move some more and have to push the preset 1 button a total of three times to get it back to "full" preset 1. Don't mean to threadjack but maybe we have the same cause to our problem.

That could be a number of things: wiring, memory module, broken/damaged limit switch, motor, gears, if it is centrally controlled/initialized through the main ECU, it could also be the caps... My guess would be memory module simply because it retracts with key-off and moves fine manually. Wiring would be more intermittent, a broken limit switch would affect normal operation as well, as would the motor and gears.

I have never had the cylinder apart so I don't know how easy/hard it is to clean.

Update: The in and out barely moves manually, but it did work when the problem first started. Up and down works so I guess it has nothing to do with the cylinder?
