Default What would YOU pay?

I have been looking for a near mint 98-00 LS 400 for over a month now and have found out that with my requirements, there are not that many to choose from.

I just recently in the last week, found a car that meets most of my requirements but I feel like the dealer (would rather find a private sale, but have not yet) is asking too much for the car. I have been going off the prices I see on the net plus edmunds.com and to a lesser extend KBB.

What would you pay for the following (assuming it was want you really wanted):

99 LS 400 w/ 151k
Diamond White
Ivory leather
New tires
Near mint paint and mint interior
Has every option sans navigation and chrome wheels

Full service records at Lexus up to 88k including 60 and 75k service but NO INDICATON that timing belt has been changed after asking dealer.

Original price was 7495, got the dealer down to 6100.

I know you sometimes have to pay more if its what you want, but does 6100 seem high to anyone else or am I focusing on the book to much?

$6,100 is a little steep. For reference, we got my car for $7k + taxes/dealer fees when it had ~88k miles and was in relatively good condition. See if you can find any other LS400s near you and see how the price is in relativity to condition.

Lexus dealer or other? If it's Lexus I'd see if they'll do your timing belt/water pump for the $6100.

Available options are listed at http://www.lexus.com/contact/pdf/1999/1999LSspecs.pdf They are accurate except that rear heated seats where never available in the U.S. market.

Are you sure it "Has every option sans navigation and chrome wheels"? Air suspension sounds nice but can be very costly (>$1,500 x 4) to repair and fairly costly to convert to steel springs.

You are correct, it does not have the air suspension (which is a plus IMO)

One thing to keep in mind - If you plan on modding, be sure to look for models without air suspension and the Pioneer "Premium Sound" radio. If you plan on a solid daily, keep those in mind anyways, as they make replacing things a little easier than having to get exclusive, and possibly discontinued, parts.

Car is not at a lexus dealer unfortunately. In fact every lexus dealer in the area I have checked carries zero LS 400s as I guess they are too "old".

I have had the best luck on buying "creampuffs" on ebay, you just have to be willing to fly to where the car is and drive it back, stick with Florida or the Western states, Arizona and New Mexico and Nevada are great places. Find cars that have plenty of high resolution photos.

The driver's seat condition and the Autocheck report (more thorough than a CARFAX) tell me everything I need to know - if the driver's seat is in new condition, the whole car is!

Too old - hadn't thought of that...

Anyway, if you plan on keeping it for a long time don't sweat a few hundred bucks on a car that's in really good shape.

new car dealerships rarely keep any cars more than 7 years old on their lot, that is the rule of thumb, banks won't finance older

I'd pay 4000... maybe 4500 if it is that dear to me. But then, I'd like to know how it was treated the last 70k miles for which there are no records... and would only buy it if there were no accidents and no abuse and regular oil changes and such. With dealers, you cannot ever tell what the story is with the car - who owned, how they drove it and so on.
I look at a used car as buying someone else's problems.
