I think this thread needs clarification that, as of August 1, 2008, PGW (Pittsburgh Glass Works) is the new name of PPG's former automotive glass division as explained in this press release.

I choose to replace my windshield with Pilkington glass. It was recommended by various auto glass shops. They said it is better then PPG formally PGW. Found a 5 start rated shop via yelp. $190.00 out the door. Can't beat it and I actually have less wind noise now then with the OEM glass. Go figure.

Here is my thread on the 430 forum.

I would go with PPG/PGW or Pilkington - I think Guardian is also an aftermarker supplier too. If I absolutely need to use Chinese glass, I'd get FYG only - and now FYG is an OEM supplier to Hyundai, Kia, GM and Chrysler. I've even seen brand new MCI and Volvo buses that cost half a million dollars with FYG glass as OEM.

PGW glass is still made in PPG plants or they use PPG made bulk glass before fabrication. My PPG windshield had a Viracon DOT number, which is 129. PPG/PGW DOT numbers are 18/129/904, but some of their glass is made in China by XYG.

it would be helpful to decode their numbering system so we can tell who the real maker of the glass is (if I buy PGW, I want USA or Japan quality glass, not XYG of China at the USA price)

Off the top of my head -

Pilkington(LOF/United LN/LNSG) - 15, 177, 404, 682
PPG/PGW - 18/129/904
Asahi/AGC Automotive - 20, 376
Nippon(which owns Pilkington) - 23
