My PVC tube shattered into peices as well when i changed it. I've worked on a bazillion cars, and the The underhood rubber on LS400s definitely doesn;t withstand the test of time very well!

What kind of tubing you use to replace?

I initially fabricated my own peice using emission tubing and a 90 degree elbow, but it rode a little to high and rubbed against the engine cover. So i just ordered an OEM hose to replace it. It pretty small, so its relatively inexpensive
